PILOT MOUNTAIN — Scott Meredith scored 24 points and East Surry stayed undefeated with a 64-41 win over West Stokes on Wednesday night.
The Cardinals and Wildcats were tied 9-9 early before East closed out the first half on a 24-11 run to go up 33-20 at halftime.
East and West traditionally have a strong rivalry, and the gym was packed with fans from both schools.
“Scott had a good first quarter and a strong third quarter,” East coach Jason Anderson said. “Those have been our strongest quarters in ballgames this season.
“We have to do a better job on the boards. West is really scrappy. They played tough the whole night. They did a good job executing their offense. It’s still early, and we have some things to improve on.”
Seth Brim scored 12 points and Carson Long added 10 for the Cardinals (5-0), who outscored the Wildcats 21-13 in the third quarter to blow the game open.
Keyshawn Rawley paced West with 13 points. The two teams will meet against in a couple weeks in King.
“We had a great atmosphere (Tuesday night) and a great atmosphere (Wednesday night). It’s fun for the fans,” Anderson said. “That’s the old conference traditional rivalry. It’s good to have these kind of games. It gets you ready for the end of the season and the playoffs.
“We’ve been on the short end of (the games against West Stokes). They’ve had some strong teams in the past. Every time we get together, both teams will play outstanding defense. They are scrappy. They’ll get better as the season goes on.”
East hosts Walkertown on Friday night.
