PILOT MOUNTAIN — East Surry improved to 2-0 with an 8-1 win over North Surry.

The Lady Cardinals took five of six singles matches and all three doubles matches against their county rival.

“I was proud of way they played today,” said East coach David Kidd. “It was our first test as a team. They played together and supported each other well.”

While the top seeds put on a great show on Court One, both coaches also raved about their sixth seeds.

For North Surry, Cassidy Williard is a freshman who came up from Meadowview Middle School, noted Coach Maggie McKee. Meadowview doesn’t have a tennis program, so Cassidy is starting from scratch.

Williard started off with an early lead, but East’s Michela Coppola came back strong and pulled out a 6-4 first set. The two battled back and forth in the second set before Coppola won 6-4.

Michela showed some heart coming from behind, according to Kidd. Then she teamed with Mikayla Manuel for a long, tough doubles win, too.

Williard and partner Hannah Southern lost, but impressed McKee with their tenacity in staying close in a 10-8 match.

“This was a good place to start,” said McKee, a first-year coach. “We have lots of work to do, but I was proud of how they played and how they didn’t give up when they were behind.”

The Lady Hounds got their lone win at the top spot where Sarah Glasco ground out a tough match with Tiffany Grace King 6-4, 6-4. Glasco wore a baseball glove on her right hand, protecting blisters she earned in finishing third in Mount Airy’s preseason invitational tournament.

At the second spot, East’s Haley Manuel won 6-2, 6-3 over Abby Lawson.

Third seed Brooke Tickle wasn’t feeling well Wednesday, but still won 6-0, 6-4 over North’s Bailey Atkins

Fourth seed Allie Hawks won 6-0, 6-1 over Rebecca Parsons. Fifth seed Mikayla Manuel won 6-1, 6-1 over Southern.

In doubles, Tickle and Haley Manuel won 8-2 over Glasco and Parsons.

King and Hawks won 8-3 over Lawson and Atkins.

East Surry was set to play today against Walkertown, but the new conference foe isn’t fielding a team this year. The Cards next travel to Surry Central on Monday.

Meanwhile the Hounds will host rival Mount Airy on Monday.
