A Friday evening single vehicle accident, involving a brother and sister, on Old Lowgap Road just before 6 p.m. resulted in the death of Billy Wayne Johnson, 21, of Lowgap.
Trooper Austin Beck with the N.C. Highway Patrol said the accident occurred just north of West Pine Street/Hwy 89. Beck said the wreck was reported to 911 by a witness who saw the accident happen.
Beck said the driver of the vehicle had not yet been determined. Johnson was extracted from the vehicle and he died on the scene. Robin Barnett, 28, of Mount Airy, was ejected from the vehicle during the wreck. She was transported to Baptist Hospital by AirCare with serious injuries and is now in stable condition.
According to Beck, the 1995 Nissan Maxima car was traveling at a high rate of speed when the driver ran off the right side of the road and over-corrected, then crossed the center line, causing the vehicle to run off the left side of the road. The vehicle hit a tree, then went into a ditch/culvert, causing it to become airborne and collide with limbs from another tree and overturning, coming to rest on the passenger side.
Neither occupant was wearing a seat belt, according to Beck.
Responding to the accident were Skull Camp Fire Department, the N.C. Highway Patrol, AirCare, and Surry County EMS.
The accident is still under investigation.
