Two people are dead following an accident on U.S. 52 Sunday evening, the North Carolina Highway Patrol reports.

According to Sgt. Kevin Barker, the accident occurred around 7:30 p.m., when a petroleum tanker truck operated by Brian Kiser, 41, of Surry County, allegedly pulled into the path of a 2005 Harley Davidson. Both the truck and motorcycle were traveling north on the highway.

“The petroleum truck was leaving Cooke Trucking and pulled into the path of the motorcycle,” Barker said. “Apparently, the motorcycle ended up striking the bottom of the trailer.

“The driver (of the truck) stated that he misjudged the distance between himself and the motorcycle,” he added.

Barker said the operator of the Harley Davidson, John E. Higginbotham, 54, of Elberton, GA., was pronounced dead at the scene.

A passenger on the motorcycle, Mae Margaret Barker, 57, of Haymore Road in Mount Airy, was transported by helicopter to Wake Forest Baptist Health, where she died shortly thereafter, according to Surry County Emergency Services Director John Shelton.

Kiser was not injured in the accident, Shelton said.

Barker said investigators will be consulting with the county district attorney on any possible charges.
