Surry County Schools were closed today at 1 p.m. Mount Airy City Schools were closed to students today for a teacher work day and the Mount Airy Board of Education meeting scheduled for tonight has been cancelled because of inclement weather forecasts.

The board’s agenda will be incorporated into the Feb. 4 meeting.

The National Weather Service in Blacksburg, Va., forecasts hazardous weather conditions with snow and rain likely later this afternoon. Early forecasts called for an accumulation of one inch of snow and temperatures falling into the mid 20s. Tonight’s forecast called for it to be partly cloudy with a slight chance of snow in the evening with it becoming clear after midnight. Wind gusts from 15-20 miles per hour which will yield wind chill values as low as 4 below zero were also predicted.
