The Ashe County Farmers Market is very excited to have again this year the professionally certified barbecue judge and chef James E. Killian (burntoutbuddies.wordpress.com), a member of the ACFM, to prepare and cook competition style barbecue pork and barbecue chicken.

James judged in all categories of barbecuing — chicken, ribs, whole hog and butts — for the Kansas City Barbecue Association and Memphis in May, 2013. In 2008, he was named to the top 10 in the nation as a barbecue chef in the Whole Hog category.

He has been a guest on the Food Channel and the Food Network, participated in the Jack Daniel Contest and finished 7th overall in whole hog contest out of 276 teams at Memphis in May. Recently, James was helping in the 2013 series of the BBQ Pit-master at Tryon, N.C.

We will be serving from 11-1 p.m. Saturday — or as long as it lasts — under the events tent on the grassy area behind the market. Last year we sold out before 1:00 p.m.. When it's gone, it's gone.

The Competition Style BBQ Menu:

1. For only $10.00 you will receive a generous portion of barbecue pork or barbecue chicken, plus sides of cole slaw, baked beans, hushpuppies and a soft drink or water.

2. For only $15.00 you will receive a generous portion of barbecue pork and barbecue chicken, plus sides of cole slaw, baked beans, hushpuppies.

Proceeds from this event will go to fund the ACFM Agricultural Scholarship.

Smoky Mountain Barbecue of West Jefferson will be providing the baked beans and hushpuppies.

So come early and shop as usual from 8-1 p.m. with our vendors for locally-grown produce, trees & shrubs, candles, flowers, cheeses, pasture fed meat, baked goods, vinegars and crafts.

For more information contact Market Manager John Smyre at (336)877-4141, (910)309-1932 or www.ashefarmersmarket.com.

The ACFM would like to thank all the support from Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project.
