On Sept. 23, author and prize winning photographer, Douglas Butler, M.D., of Ashe County will share his insight and photographic techniques used to produce his most recent book, “North Carolina Civil War Monuments: An Illustrated History” (McFarland, 2013).

The presentation to the Ashe Camera Club will be at 7 p.m. at the BREMCO building on N.C. 163 in West Jefferson.

Five years in the making the book explores 109 extensively researched and photographed Civil War monuments, 101 honoring Confederate troops and eight commemorating Union forces including one dedicated to African-American soldiers. North Carolina lost over 30,000 mostly young men during the war. All 109 monuments were raised prior to the Civil War Centennial. In North Carolina, the movement to fund, design and acquire land for monuments was conducted largely by women, not only to rebury the wartime dead, but to memorialize them and express the grief and mourning of a grateful community.

Butler will be participating in various exhibits and lectures including: a Solo Photo Exhibit in Winston-Salem running through Oct. 30; Art on the Mountain, book signing and photo sale on Sept. 28 at the Arts Council in West Jefferson; on Nov. 3 a lecture and slide presentation at the High Point Public Library; and photo exhibit running through Dec. 13, 2014 at the High Point Museum.

Butler, also a mountain climber, is widely known in the region for his second book, “A Walk Atop America: Fifty Summits and a Dream to Reach Them All,” published in 2007. Several years later, he gave an ACC presentation on photographing and maintaining photo equipment at extreme temperatures and elevations.

The photo club will also critique the September assignment, images interpreting the topic “heat.”
