DOBSON — The regular meeting of the Surry Community College Board of Trustees opened honoring the service of a past board member and a scholarship presentation by the State Employees Credit Union.
Former Trustee LaDonna McCarther was presented with a plaque honoring her for 15 years of service to the college by Chairwoman Deidre Rogers.
“I miss you all already,” said McCarther. “It’s been a pleasure and an honor to serve with the board. If I can be of service, don’t hesitate to call on me. Thank you for becoming an important part of my life.”
Mitchell Mabe of Mount Airy and Justin Thomas Badgett of West Stokes were the recipients of a $5,000 grant each. Mabe is a 2013 honor graduate of MAHS. SECU representatives on hand to award the scholarships were Karen Hall, Tony Martin and Randy Ledford.
Ledford described Mabe as an avid outdoorsman and someone “who will do whatever it takes to get a job done and will give his best effort to accomplish the tasks ahead of him to the best of his abilities.” He is the son of Donna Stevens and David Mabe and also volunteers for the United Fund of Surry County and Surry Medical Ministries.
Mabe also was recognized for earning an academic letter all four years of high school, the Presidential Academic Award and graduating with a full semester of college level courses completed through dual enrollment classes. He graduated 10th in his class with a grade-point average of 4.0 in both high school and college level studies. He plans to completed his associate’s degree in criminal justice and pursue a position with the North Carolina Highway Patrol as a patrolman.
Badgett is the son of Eric and Priscilla Badgett and is a 2013 honor graduate of West Stokes High School. He was a member of the National Honor Society, Future Farmers of America, Mu Alpha Theta and played junior varsity baseball, junior varsity and varsity football and varsity track. He also attended the American Legion Tar Heel Boys’ State program at Catawba College. He has been with the Boy Scouts of America since 2003 and earned his Eagle Scout Award.
Both Badgett and Mabe plan on attending SCC.
College President Dr. David Shockley gave the Facilities Committee report to the board and told them the school is in the process of updating many of the facilities.
“It is amazing what new paint and carpeting has done to get rid of the institutional white walls,” said Shockley. “In the next months we will have the newly created writing and academic center completed.”
He said these two offices have will occupy the entire second floor of the library and have been expanded to meet student demand.
Shockley and Student Government Association President Audrey Mahan briefed the board on plans for a College Fair to be held Sept. 16 at the school for high school juniors and seniors in Surry and Yadkin counties. The event’s centerpiece is the fair where participants can meet with different college representatives about attending college. This is set to be held in the SCC gym from 9 to 11 a.m.
Following this activity, others scheduled include a grape stomping challenge, an archaeology hunt, DUI Cornhole, a Bungee run, a climbing wall and a street sign creation station. Food featured at this fun day will include funnel cakes, pizza, sno cones, candy apples, cotton candy and popcorn.
New employees approved by the board were Jennifer Jimenez as Spanish instructor, Wesley Lawson as web specialist and Michael Wall as lead instructor, construction management. HVAC instructor for Corporate and Continuing Education Keith Senter resigned, and Director of Medical Assisting Jean Mosley’s retirement was approved. The board also approved the donation of an upright Baldwin Piano to the school by Daniel Jackson.
