PILOT MOUNTAIN — The human remains discovered Thursday in Pilot Mountain have been identified.
Sheriff Graham Atkinson said late Tuesday that the remains, discovered by a county resident in a wooded area off Fox Trot Lane in the Pilot Mountain Area, have been discovered to be those of a man missing since July 3.
“Information from the Office of the Medical Examiner at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center confirms that the remains are those of Douglas J. Bonds, 41,” Atkinson said.
Bonds was reported missing by family members on July 3, and Atkinson said investigators had been searching for him since that time.
According to the sheriff, the positive identification was made using medical records.
“At this time, no cause of death has been determined, and further examination will be conducted in an effort to do so,” he said. “The investigation remains open and active.”
