Anyone who watches television these days knows that carrying around that extra body fat can lead to conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure, but officials at Reeves Community Center have a plan in place to help combat obesity in Surry County.
Registration is set to begin on Monday for this year’s next session of the center’s Biggest Loser/Losing 4 Life program, which offers participants the opportunity to compete against their neighbors to see who can lose the most weight.
Classes begin Aug. 20.
“The program is open to anyone who may be overweight or obese,” said program organizer Bradley Key. “For this next session, we’re also inviting employees of our 85 corporate members to team up with their co-workers and compete against other local businesses to see who can lose the largest percentage of body weight.”
Key said the corporate challenge is open to teams of five to eight members.
He noted that the program offers participants the chance to learn about healthy weight loss while shedding pounds at the same time.
“We feel like the key to healthy weight loss is a combination of exercise and nutrition,” he said. “That’s why we offer this program, as a chance to combine these two things together to foster a healthier community.”
The Biggest Loser/Losing 4 Life program dates back to 2006, and Key said the thousands of participants over the years can attest to its effectiveness.
“With each program, we can see a clear difference in the participants’ attitude and self-esteem,” he said. “This is in addition to the obvious, measurable benefits of weight loss and improved fitness levels.
“This has affected the lives of literally hundreds of participants in a very positive way.”
But Key said he hopes the public will understand that the program is for the obese, rather than simply someone who wants to lose five or 10 pounds.
“I want this program to be for people who really need to lose weight,” he said, noting that participants of previous sessions can return to continue their weight loss journey. “I love working with folks who need to lose weight.”
Just ask last session winners Lance Edmonds and husband and wife team Lincoln and Chelsea Duncan.
During the session, which ended on July 25, Edmonds lost a total of 22 pounds, shedding two and a half percent of body fat and four inches from his waistline.
The Duncans combined to lose 26 pounds.
But Key said that often those numbers are even higher among participants, especially first-timers.
“This was one of our smaller sessions and was comprised of mostly returnees to continue to enjoy the exercise classes and the accountability of weekly weigh-ins,” Key said.
As for advice for those considering participating in the next session: “Come on out and join us,” Key said. “We have a good time.”
