DOBSON — A 19-year-old county man is dead following a motorcycle accident Wednesday evening.
Jacob Chance Beck, of Zephyr Road in Dobson, was riding a 2001 Yamaha motorcycle with his father at around 6:40 p.m., when he lost control of the bike, according to Trooper J.L. Gallimore of the North Carolina Highway Patrol.
The accident occurred on Route 601 at the intersection of Mt. Herman Church Road.
“His dad was in front of him on one motorcycle and the son was behind him,” Surry County Emergency Services Director John Shelton said. “They went into a curve and the son lost control, crossed the center line and went underneath an oncoming pickup.”
“He overturned the bike, came off the bike and the truck, which was coming southbound, hit him,” Gallimore said.
The truck, a 2008 Dodge Ram 1500, was operated by Jerry Hodge, who was off-duty at the time from his job as a Mount Airy Police Officer.
Gallimore said that while he could not confirm rumors that the motorcycle had been purchased Wednesday, he could confirm that insurance was put on the bike earlier that day.
“He’d had a motorcycle learner’s permit since January,” he said. “It did appear he was an inexperienced rider, and I don’t think speed or alcohol were factors.”
No charges will be filed in the accident, Gallimore said.
