Officials are trying to determine the cause of a single-vehicle accident on McBride Road that claimed the life of a Mount Airy man this afternoon.
The wreck victim was identified as Jeffrey Carter Stanley, 45, of 191 Spring Valley Lane.
Stanley was operating a Kia Spectra southbound on McBride Road in the Flat Rock community around 3 p.m. when the vehicle explicably went off the road at the Teddy Bear Lane intersection and struck a tree.
“He left the roadway for no reason and hit the tree,” Surry Emergency Medical Service Director John Shelton said of the accident that happened in a slight curve. Stanley was the only occupant of the vehicle.
Trooper Austin Beck of the N.C. Highway Patrol, who is investigating the crash, said its cause was uncertain pending a further inquiry, but that either a medical problem or some type of impairment were possible factors.
“We’re still waiting on a toxicology report,” the trooper said Sunday afternoon, which will pinpoint whether a medical issue or alcohol or drugs were involved.
Although rain had fallen in the area much of the day, Beck added that weather, as well speed, were “definitely not” to blame.
Beck, who was wearing a seat belt, died at the scene. Heavy front-end damage resulted to the car.
