DOBSON — A CommScope tractor-trailer from Hickory veered off the southbound lanes of I-77 between Elkin’s N.C. 268 exit and Dobson’s N.C. 601 exit Thursday evening. The truck struck several trees before coming to rest in the woods.
The driver had only minor injuries. However, according to Emergency Services Director John Shelton the driver was transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center for treatment.
Shelton said that though nobody was seriously injured, it would take hours to recover the tractor-trailer. Shelton said HAZMAT personnel would have to drain the fuel from the truck prior to moving it. The wreck caused a traffic jam on I-77 that was several miles long.
Central Surry Volunteer Fire Department, the Dobson Rescue Squad, Surry County EMS and the North Carolina Highway Patrol all responded to the accident.
The accident is still under investigation, and officials at the scene did not release the name of the driver.
