DOBSON — Eileen Coleman, Surry Community College’s physical therapist assistant program director, recently received her Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree from Nova Southeastern University.

Coleman, who has worked at Surry for five years, is a member of the college’s Health Sciences division.

The college’s Associate Dean of Health Sciences Dr. Yvonne Johnson said, “Eileen has been instrumental in quality improvement efforts with Surry’s Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program. Under her guidance, our licensure scores for PTA graduates have soared. Constantly seeking new ways to engage the students both on campus and in the community, these students benefit from her years of clinical experience and her business acumen.”

Due to what the collect calls “the ever-growing nature of the medical field,” the American Physical Therapy Association encourages those with a Bachelor’s of Physical Therapy or Master’s of Physical Therapy to pursue their doctorate in order to ensure that every member of the physical therapy profession is providing the highest, most informed standard of care.

The encouragement to go back to school was a welcomed catalyst for Coleman to pursue her doctorate.

“I love to learn,” Coleman said. “I wanted to increase my knowledge base and become current with new treatment techniques, so that I could offer more to my students.”

SCC’s physical therapist assistant degree program prepares graduates to work in direct patient care settings under the supervision of physical therapists. Assistants work to improve or restore function by alleviation or prevention of physical impairment and perform other essential activities in a physical therapy department. Upon completion of the degree program, graduates are eligible to take the national licensure exam.

Graduates of Surry’s program can seek employment in a variety settings including general hospitals, rehabilitation centers, skilled nursing facilities, home health agencies, outpatient clinics, and public schools.
