Surry Community College’s Small Business Center will be holding free seminars and workshops throughout the month at various locations in Surry and Yadkin counties.
Fundraising Fundamentals will be the topic of a seminar on Tuesday, Aug. 15 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Center for Public Safety, 1220 State St., Mount Airy. Non-profit organizations must continuously look for new funding sources and ways to support their services and mission. Fundraising is a much needed skill for many non-profits as support from traditional funding shrinks and organizations search for more diversified revenue streams. This workshop reviews the primary elements of fundraising, compares the types of fundraising to an organization’s needs, and provides best practices. Participants will evaluate their organization’s needs and determine where fundraising events can supplement their operations, what potential new diversified streams they could utilize, and what roles staff, volunteers, and board members should play in development work.
Using eBay to Grow Your Small Business will be the topic of a workshop on Tuesday, Aug. 15 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Center for Public Safety in Mount Airy. Learn the best practices to use when setting up an eBay account, listing items for sale, taking payments, and shipping. Topics will include eBay features and policies, choosing formats and categories, writing descriptions that sell, submitting photos, using the help section, feedback, using PayPal, shipping tips, and everything else you need to know to utilize eBay as a primary marketing tool.
Bootcamp Basics for Beginner Non-Profits will be the subject of a seminar on Thursday, Aug. 17 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Center for Public Safety in Mount Airy. This workshop will offer a comprehensive checklist of things that must be done in the first three years of starting a non-profit in order to lay a foundation for lasting success. Understanding key documentation and legal processes is critical to starting a non-profit organization. Non-profit business owners, prospective non-profit business owners, and new executive directors of existing non-profits will learn the importance and procedures for establishing checklists and timelines for their organizations with critical development milestones. In addition, those in attendance will learn how to ensure that an organization is legally compliant and following all regulations when soliciting funds at the local, state, and federal levels as well as how to create a more realistic operating budget.
How to Start a Small Business will be covered in a workshop on Tuesday, Aug. 22 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Center for Public Safety in Mount Airy. Understand the basics of starting a business in this seminar designed to take participants from idea to opportunity. Learn key strategies for start-up, financing, and marketing, as well as important information regarding legal issues, licensing, zoning, operations and more. Discover the importance of self-assessment, evaluate the feasibility of your own business ideas, and leave with a wealth of knowledge on the many resources available to help you start and successfully operate a business.
Grant Research will be the topic of a seminar on Wednesday, Aug. 23 from 9 a.m. to noon at The Yadkin Center, 1001 College Drive, Yadkinville. This workshop is suited for anyone looking for help with finding and applying for grants to support their non-profit organization. Participants will learn the details needed to begin and successfully conduct research, and the skill set to help save time during the search process. The seminar will cover the details needed before starting any research, efficient research management methods, locating available grants at the local, state and federal levels, navigating websites to find funding opportunities, grant databases, and pitfalls to avoid.
How to Write a Business Plan will be the subject of a workshop on Tuesday, Aug. 29 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Center for Public Safety in Mount Airy. A business plan can be the most important tool a small business owner has. Learn how to turn your ideas into a solid plan for financing and long-term success. This seminar teaches participants the important components of a business plan and helps lay the foundation for a winning plan. Find out how marketing, operations, and finance are interrelated. Discover how a business plan is used by potential lenders, the do’s and don’ts of writing a plan, and steps for making the process easy in this seminar designed for new and established business owners.
Grant Writing 101 will be the topic of a workshop on Wednesday, Aug. 30 from 9 a.m. to noon at The Yadkin Center, in Yadkinville. As funding becomes more difficult to secure, non-profit organizations face significant challenges to fulfill their missions. This three-hour seminar reviews the questions non-profits need to answer prior to search and applying for grant funds, outlines the seven basic elements of most proposals, and shows participants how to match their needs to fund priorities. Participants focus on the major questions that need to be answered prior to a grant application and how to incorporate these answers into research and ultimately a competitive proposal.
How to Find Merchandise to Sell Online will be covered in a seminar on Thursday, Aug. 31 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Center for Public Safety in Mount Airy. In this fast paced class, students will learn the secrets to sourcing merchandise to sell online in many different ways including wholesale, drop shippers, foreign sources, and liquidation.
