SCC’s Burton recognized for her work

A Surry Community College official has joined a long line of workers there who have recently been recognized for their work at the school, or within professional organizations related to their work at the college.

Debbie Burton, the college’s Computer Information Systems director and system administrator, recently received this year’s North Carolina Community Colleges Institutional Information Processing System (IIPS) Users Group Outstanding Achievement Award.

The award is presented annually to a person who has provided “outstanding service to IIPS, or any IIPS member who has achieved an outstanding accomplishment in some other area of their life,” the college said in announcing the recognition.

Burton has served in a number of leadership roles for the system, including president, treasurer, executive vice president, and Western Region vice president.

Darrin Billings, the college’s assistant Computer Information Systems director, nominated Burton for the award.

Billings explained his choice to nominate her by saying, “Debbie has a love for the IIPS organization. She is willing to impart her knowledge to anyone that asks. She considers IIPS to be more than just a group of information technology professionals; she considers it to be a family, and is affectionately known as ‘Mother Burton’.”

Dr. Candace Holder, vice president and chief information officer at Surry, echoed Billings’ sentiment.

“Debbie is an asset to the technology services team and does an amazing job administering colleague and other related services. This is a well deserved award,” Holder said,

Burton was honored and humbled to receive the award.

“I feel both privileged and undeserving of this recognition, and I am very grateful to be included in a group of truly outstanding people in the North Carolina Community College System and technology services field,” she said. “It is my extreme honor to represent Surry Community College in this way.”
