Twelve Surry Community College transfer students recently graduated from Western Carolina University.
Seth Childress of Pilot Mountain received a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Dana Collins of Thurmond, Kristen Collins of Dobson, Destin Hubbard of Elkin, Cody Lewis of Hays, Amber Mason of Yadkinville, Emily Parks of Elkin, Charles Price of Mount Airy, Vickie Ramey of Dobson, and Luis Rayo-Medran all received Bachelor of Science degrees. Hunter Hutchens of Harmony obtained a Bachelor of Social Work degree, and Toni Atwell of Mount Airy received a Master of Social Work degree.
“The College Transfer program at Surry gives students a head start on a bachelor’s degree before attending a four-year college or university,” Surry officials said in announcing the graduations. “Students benefit by being able to explore different fields of study at a lower tuition cost than that of a four-year college, while also preparing themselves academically for the rigorous university workload.
“The revised Comprehensive Articulation Agreement makes courses easily transfer from a North Carolina community college to a state university, in this case, Western Carolina. Research shows that students who transfer from a community college outperform students who go straight to a four-year school. Surry is evaluated on how well transfer students do after the transition to a university, and historically SCC has outperformed other community colleges in the state,” the community college said.
College Transfer students have the option to choose an Associate in Science, Associate in Arts or an Associate in Fine Arts in Visual Arts. All these programs are offered at the Dobson campus, and the Associate in Arts degree is also offered at The Yadkin Center in Yadkinville and online.
