DOBSON — In memory of a child who died at a young age, a grant will help another local child’s wishes come true.

According to a press release from the Surry County Schools, the 2017 Carrie Elmore grant was awarded to Ariel Cabrera Quiroz, a third-grade student at Rockford Elementary School who was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 2015.

In 2011 Courtney Scott established the award as her senior project. Scott named it in honor of her cousin, Carrie Elmore, who died as a middle school student after battling Ewing sarcoma since the age of 5, according to the media release.

The grant consists of a $500 award to make the wish of a Surry County Schools student in grades kindergarten through eight who has a chronic or terminal illness come true.

Ariel, who was presented with the award recently, loves to play in the water, reads the statement. The $500 will fund a trip and a stay to the Great Wolf Lodge in Concord. The grant was accompanied by a bag of water toys from Sherry Scott, Carrie’s aunt.

Ariel’s illness caused him to miss the 2015-16 school year, but he was back in school — though still receiving chemotherapy — for the 2016-17 school year.

Many members of Carrie’s family attended the award presentation.

“This gift helps the recipient to have a fun day without thinking of doctors and hospitals. We just want him to have a great time,” said Sherry Scott.

Ariel’s family was thankful for receiving the $500 Great Wolf Lodge gift card.

“Thank you for giving this happy day to him,” said Ariel’s mother.
