SCC’s Holder receives state award

Dr. Candace Holder, vice president and chief information officer of Surry Community College, was recently recognized for her service by the NC State Board of Community Colleges.

Alongside Katherine Davis of the NC Community Colleges System Office, Holder was named a part of the system’s Most Valuable Team. Holder and Davis were nominated for the Most Valuable Team award by members of Halifax Community College’s administration for their assistance at Halifax Community College during the fall semester.

Halifax Community College sought help from the System Office by reaching out to Davis when the college’s distance learning director was stricken by a terminal illness with only two weeks prior to the start of the fall 2016 semester, leaving a great deal of work incomplete.

From there, Davis informed Holder of the urgent need of support at Halifax. Holder immediately volunteered to assist Halifax with the void they were facing due to the illness of their distance learning director.

“I knew (Holder) as a leader in the Community College Distance Learning world, and so it was a great relief to know we had experienced help available,” said Halifax Community College’s Information System Manager Jerry Thompson.

Dr. Deryl Davis Fulmer, vice president of academic affairs at Halifax, added, “From the very first day, problems were solved, and all concerns were addressed. The faculty were extremely pleased, and the students never knew there were any issues.”

In addition to helping Halifax Community College set up students and classes for distance learning in the fall semester, Holder also visited Halifax once a new director of distance learning was hired to share her expertise with Halifax faculty and staff.

Dr. Holder stated, “While it is a tremendous honor to be acknowledged for this award by my peers at Halifax, lending a hand to a neighbor in their time of need is simply the right thing to do. I was so surprised and humbled by this thoughtful act and am sincerely grateful to the Halifax Community College family and the North Carolina State Board of Community Colleges for this recognition.”
