Music, dance among SCC offerings


Surry Community College has a number of arts and related classes coming up in January.

Music lessons

Beginner Guitar will be offered Jan. 10 through Feb. 28 on Tuesdays from 4 to 6 p.m. in Room J-103 at Surry Community College, 630 S. Main St., Dobson.

Students will learn basic guitar chords and strumming patterns for traditional music. By the end of the class, the student should be able to back-up fiddle tunes and vocal songs and jam with other musicians. No playing experience is necessary. Students need their own working guitar, picks and tuners. Advance registration and payment of $80 are required.

Beginner Mandolin will be offered on Jan. 10 through Feb. 28 on Tuesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. in Room J-103 at Surry Community College in Dobson.

Students will learn the basic mandolin chords and strumming patterns as well as learn how to play lead melodies by ear. By the end of the course, each student should have the skills to play basic Old Time, Celtic and Bluegrass tunes and continue playing on their own with others in a jam setting. Students will need their own working mandolins, picks and tuners. Advance registration and payment of $80 are required.

Dance

The college has dance classes starting in January for adults at The Pilot Center, 612 East Main Street, Pilot Mountain.

Line Dance Classes will be held each Thursday, Jan. 5 through 26 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.. Learn the latest line dances in this four-week session and never feel left out at weddings or parties again. Pat Adkins will instruct. Advance registration and advance payment of $35 are required.

Shag Dance Classes will be held on Thursdays, Jan. 5 through 26 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Learn the quintessential summer dance that began in the Carolinas. With several venues in our area for outdoor concerts and shagging, you’ll be able to join the fun. Partners are encouraged but not necessary. Advance registration and payment of $35 are required.

Digital photography

A Digital Photography Intro class will be held Tuesday, Jan. 10 from 6 to 9 p.m. at The Elkin Center, 1461 N. Bridge St., Elkin.

This course will introduce students to the basics of digital photography. Students will learn how to set a camera for any shooting situation and become familiar with a list of terms used every day in digital photography and printing. The end result will be better pictures, a greater knowledge of digital photography and a better understanding of how to capture those magical moments forever.

It is highly recommended that students bring their digital camera and owner’s manual to class along with a notebook and pen or pencil. Advance registration and payment of $22 is required.

Digital Photography: DSLR/Mastering the Manual will be offered Jan. 10 through 31 from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays at The Pilot Center in Pilot Mountain. The class will also be offered Jan. 12 through Feb. 2 from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursdays at The Elkin Center.

This course will help students improve their skills and become more proficient with DSLR (Digital Single-Lens Reflex) cameras. From choosing the right equipment to understanding what it takes in getting the right shot, this class will help increase your passion and proficiency in these two areas of capturing images.

Students should be aware this class is taught more from a DSLR camera perspective. Students should be familiar with their camera and bring their camera’s operation manual to class. Advance registration and payment of $50 is required.

Cake decorating

Join Stephanie Venable, owner of Granny Ruth’s Bakery, will be teaching SCC’s Cake Decorating for Beginners course held Jan. 9 through Feb. 6.

Students will learn the basics of using buttercream icing – how to properly fill and ice a cake, basic buttercream borders, flowers and more. Supplies are an additional cost to the student. Please ask for a supply list. The class will meet on Mondays from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in Room 111 of the Center for Public Safety, 1220 State St., Mount Airy.
