The Small Business Center at Surry Community College will be holding several free seminars and workshops in January at various locations in Surry and Yadkin counties.
Building your Team will be discussed at a seminar on Jan. 12 from 8 to 10 a.m. at the Holiday Inn Express, Mount Airy. Small business owners eventually need to build teams of employees, partners and co-workers. Workshop participants will learn how to build teams that excel. They will learn how to locate, attract and capture talent, how to assess for fit, and about the red flags that spell danger. This knowledge is critical to avoid expensive hiring mistakes. Jim Blaylock will be the speaker.
Sales and Use Tax will be examined on Jan. 19 from 8 to 10 a.m. at The Yadkin Center, 4649 Highway 601, Yadkinville. Participants will learn all the basics of sales and use taxes. This seminar is ideal for retailers, or any business in sales. The speaker will be Karen Bargsley.
Managing your Business Reputation will be discussed on Jan. 19 from 9 to 11 a.m. at The Elkin Center, 1461 North Bridge Street, Elkin. Explore your business’ service delivery as it relates to your customers. What are they saying about their experience with your company? Learn how to effectively communicate your vision, mission and values to your customers. Additionally, what are the best ways to broadcast customer testimonials and to handle complaints? Brian Wright will be the speaker.
How to Start a Small Business will be explored in a seminar led by Chisa Pennix-Brown, Jan. 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. at The Yadkin Center, 4649 Highway 601, Yadkinville. We will discuss the difference between a Sole Proprietor, Partnership and Corporation; the importance of record keeping; what you should keep and for how long. Participants will also get an overview of their tax responsibilities as a small business.
Fueling your Business will examined on Jan. 28 from 9 to 11 a.m. at The Pilot Center, 612 East Main Street, Pilot Mountain with speaker Amanda Sorrells. This seminar is designed to help small business owners and prospective entrepreneurs understand how to access credit and capital for their businesses. It will review the six basic principles many lenders use to make credit decisions and provide an overview of the resources available in North Carolina for small businesses. Finally, the seminar will cover the Rural Center’s Microenterprise Loan Program and provide details about its lending criteria and application process.
