CANA, Va. — An accident involving a Carroll County Emergency Services ambulance occurred early Wednesday morning, sending three individuals to area hospitals.

According to officials from the Virginia State Police the ambulance collided with another vehicle at 12:05 a.m.

The accident report, filed by Trooper R.B. Phipps, states that Cody G. Sapp, 22, of Cana, Virginia, allegedly fell asleep at the wheel while driving on U.S. 52. According to the report Sapp ran off the road to his right, over-corrected and went left-of-center, striking the ambulance head-on.

The police report continues on to state that the ambulance “overturned.” Carroll County EMS personnel Frank A. Butcher, 24, and Lee Smith, 31, were manning the ambulance. Butcher was driving the vehicle.

According to the report there was an estimated $25,000 to the ambulance, and Sapp’s vehicle sustained an estimated $1,500 in damage.

An official with the Virginia State Police said she believed all three men were transported to a local hospital for treatment, though she was not aware of the medical condition of any of the three at the time of treatment.

Attempts reach Carroll County EMS officials were not immediately successful. This story will be updated when new information becomes available.
