For the second year, the family of Debra Kirkman Sawyers is sponsoring a memorial ride in her memory that will benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Sawyers died two years ago and on the anniversary of her death, her family honors her memory by raising money for St. Jude’s, a favorite charity of Sawyers when she was alive. “We want to do anything we can to give a Mom or a Dad even a little more time with their child. Every minute is precious,” said her husband, Gary Sawyers

Before Debra Sawyers died, she was sick for six months. She made more than a dozen trips to four different hospitals. Her husband stayed with her during the day and her sisters at night. They hope that the funds they raise for research can help other families avoid that fate.

Last year’s event raised more than $1,700 and Sawyers hopes to top that amount this year. The ride begins at Pilot Mountain Community Church where Sawyers is the pastor and where his wife attended at the end of her life. The ride has three stops and ends at Shelton Church of the Brethren, her childhood church.

The $20 entry fee for drivers makes them eligible for the grand prize drawing at the last stop, two tickets to Charlotte Motor Speedway for next year, as well as all of the other prizes and drawings. Additional riders in vehicles can pay $5 to be eligible for the grand prize drawing. The event will conclude with a free hot dog meal at the last stop. The ride is open to all kinds of vehicles, cars, trucks and motorcycles.

Sawyers stresses that the event is completely underwritten. “All of the donations raised will go directly to St. Jude’s.”

The Second Annual Debra Kirkman Sawyers Memorial Ride for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital begins at 11 a.m. at Pilot Mountain Community Church, 146 Stone Valley Lane, Pilot Mountain.
