Police reports


• An attempt by an unknown suspect to steal a keg of beer from a local Mexican restaurant was thwarted by employees there, according to Mount Airy Police Department reports. Police learned Monday of the incident, which occurred Saturday at the Tlaquepaque location on Rockford Street, where the suspect opened an unlocked outside freezer and removed the large keg of beer. However, employees noticed the male involved and, after confronting him, recovered the keg. No arrests have been reported.

• Police were told Tuesday that a breaking and entering had occurred at Zibby’s Cleaners & Laundry on North South Street, which involved an attempt to remove the covers of building vents that received $300 in damage as a result. The crime was discovered Monday.

• Property damage was discovered on Aug. 25 at the city-owned Oakdale Cemetery on North Main Street, where grave markers were used in an attempt to gain entry to a storage building. Total damage put at $1,950 occurred to an electrical power meter box, windows/wire mesh and a telephone box.

• A case of obtaining property by false pretense occurred on Aug. 24, which involved the use of a stolen credit card number to obtain currency of an undisclosed sum. Rebecca Crane Pendleton, a Willow Hill Circle resident, is the victim of the crime.

• A breaking and entering and larceny at the home of Tracey Doby Gomez on Hadley Street on Aug. 23 resulted in the theft of property valued at $620, including 10 rings, three bracelets and a jewelry box. Entry was gained by cutting a door screen.

• Daniel Lee Schifler, 21, of 1785 Twin Oaks Road, Elkin, was arrested on Aug. 23 on an outstanding warrant for failing to appear in court, which had been filed on Aug. 12. Schifler was encountered during a suspicious-person call at 2905 Rockford St., the address for Sheetz. He was found to have smoked incense using a glass device, police records show, which led to violations of inhaling toxic vapors and possessing toxic vapors. Schifler was jailed under a $300 secured bond and slated for a Sept. 21 appearance in Surry District Court.

• A Samsung Galaxy smartphone and an Otter phone case, valued altogether at $600 and owned by Jonathan David Riggs of Westfield Road, were stolen on Aug. 20 after being left inside an unsecured vehicle at Goad’s Auto & Truck Sales on West Lebanon Street.

• Damage valued at about $100 was discovered on Aug. 20 at a business location on Factory Street, where an attempt was made to enter the building. Barbed wire, a fence and a locking latch were harmed in the process, with Alvin Eugene Eckenrod of Savannah Lane listed as the victim.

• An apparent culinary-minded thief struck Walmart on Aug. 20, when a pasta pot and a crock pot, valued altogether at $60, were stolen from the store.

• The larceny of a wallet owned by Candice Renee Johnson of Aleshia Lane, Pilot Mountain, was discovered on Aug. 17 at Mayberry Mall. It contained an undisclosed sum of money, a Visa credit card, a Rue 21 gift card, other cards, a driver’s license and a Social Security card. Everything but the cash was listed as recovered.

• Evelyn Juanita Dawson, 43, of 161 Grassy Knoll Lane, was arrested for allegedly driving while impaired on South South Street near Granite Street on Aug. 8, after police investigated an accident involving a 2010 Kia Forte SX Dawson was operating. She also was cited for an expired driver’s license and possession of drug paraphernalia and confined in the Surry County Jail under a $1,000 secured bond. Dawson is scheduled to appear in District Court on Dec. 28.
