An ice cream social for dogs?
It makes sense to Vivian and Chazz Elstone, owners of Scoop’s Ice Cream on West Pine Street in Mount Airy.
“It’s all part of the dog days of summer,” said Chazz Elstone, pun fully intended.
On Saturday from 2 to 7 p.m., customers were welcomed to bring their pets to the ice cream stand for a Doggy Ice Cream Social for a dish of vanilla ice cream garnished with a dog treat.
“It’s just a free thing we’re doing today just for fun,” Elstone said, and that he and his wife wanted to combine their love for dogs and ice cream — and the hot August days that are perfect for ice cream eating.
“They say your not supposed to give chocolate to dogs, but vanilla is all right,” Elstone said. “And dogs always love ice cream.”
Molly Lankford, of Mount Airy, said her two dogs, Snickers and Sophie, love ice cream but that usually she buys it from the store.
Pointing to Snickers, who helped himself to his own dish and some of Sophie’s, Lankford said, “He loves ice cream more than she does.”
The Elstones’ dog is fond of the treat as well.
“We just have one dog,” said Elstone. “He goes out and cleans out the parking lot after we close every night.”
