Progress is being made on the proposed solarium at Northern Hospital of Surry County.
Alan Moore, an architect with CJMW-Architecture of Winston-Salem, visited Northern Hospital recently to do a structural evaluation.
Ned Hill, hospital director, Moore and several community members who proposed the project were at the meeting this past week.
Moore also discussed possible design plans based on the rooftop and the space available.
“It’s an exciting project and a much needed one. Our firm does a lot of design for long-term care and rehab facilities. The ability to go outside and sit in the sun light, it’s part of the rehab process.” Moore said.
The hospital also worked with Carol Burke and Bettsee McPhail to get a fund set up where donations could be made.
McPhail said they need to raise $100,000 before Aug. 1 to pay for plan designs and contractor services.
McPhail and Burke proposed the plan to Hill recently after meeting with several former residents of the long-term rehab care facility.
“We feel like getting outdoors is a vital part of the rehabilitation process,” Burke said.
Since the hospital moved the facility onto the third floor, the residents accessibility to outside is not as easy as for some patients; expressed McPhail.
Donations can be made to Northern Surry Foundation for Better Health, Inc. “I Built That” 501c-3 number is 38-3669834. You may contact Bettsee McPhail at 755-6008 for more information.
