The Pilot Mountain Cardinals Little League Football team captured the 2009 Surry County Little League Super Bowl on Sunday.

The Cardinals defeated the West Stokes Prowlers 20-14 in triple overtime to take the title.

The game was scoreless until the second quarter when Preston Jacobs of West Stokes broke through the line and blocked a Pilot Mountain punt, which was scooped up and returned for a touchdown by Gage Edwards.

The score remained 8-0 until the fourth quarter when the Cardinals Logan Sheets scored on a run and Tyler Smith scored the extra point to tie the score.

Regulation ended in the 8-8 tie and neither team could find the endzone in the first overtime period.

In the second overtime, Pilot’s Blake Marion ran in for a score but the point after was no good, leaving the score at 14-6.

The Prowlers then scored on their next possession and with the game hanging in the balance Pilot’s J.T. Lichtenberger blocked the extra point to send the game to a third overtime.

The Cardinals scored on a Lucas Koons run to take a 20-14 edge, but again missed the point after.

When West got the ball, the Prowlers met the toughest resistance of the night with consecutive plays losing yardage to push West inside its own 20 yard line.

Then on third down Pilot’s Staymon Johnson broke up a pass in the endzone followed by another batted pass on fourth down to secure the win.

Logan Sheets led the way for Pilot Mountain with 76 yards on 11 carries for one touchdown and was followed by Lucas Koons, who had 16 carries for 39 yards and a score and Blake Marion who carried the ball three times for 12 yards and one score.

J.T. Lichtenberger had 12 tackles to lead the way defensively for the Cards and was followed by Lucas Koons with 10.

Pilot Mountain held West to just 35 yards on 34 offensive plays.
