County school board to meet tonight

Staff Report
Published: Sunday, September 7, 2008 9:32 PM EDT
DOBSON — Surry County Schools may be participating in a new campaign to get parents involved with their kids’ day-to-day lives, if the school board approves of the participation.

The school board is scheduled to hear a presentation on “Be There,” “a multimedia researched-based campaign designed to encourage parents to make ordinary moments extraordinary by connecting with their children during the daily routines of life,” according to the agenda packet information on the program.

The Piedmont Triad Education Consortium, of which Surry County Schools is a part, is leading the drive to bring “Be There” to the area after entering a two-year contract with the campaign, which will mean the distribution of more than 250,000 parent brochures, posting billboards and offering DVDs and posters.

The campaign is scheduled to begin Oct. 6 with a news conference in Greensboro by the consortium, and locally the week of Oct. 20 with a news release and parent meetings. During the 2008-09 and 2009-10 school years, the “Be There” logo will be added to all school system and school level publications.

Also to be considered during the school board’s meeting today at 5 p.m. are:

- The United Fund of Surry kick-off, which the board is requested to encourage participation by school system employees.

- The 2008-09 final budget, which will require final board approval.

- The random drug testing program, with approval of the contract for counseling services needing a vote.

- An update on School Resource Officers, who have been trained and will be carrying tasers as required by the Surry County Sheriff’s Office this year.

- Field trip approval.

- The 1:1 Initiative, for which the board is requested to give approval for teacher training this year and a pilot project in seventh grade.

- Instruction matters, which will include updates on pyramid of interventions and other curriculum focus points.

- Request from the Mountain Park Youth Foundation to install a donated score board.

- Update on school construction.

- Update on Technology Policy revisions and Student Usage policy.

- Suggested policy revisions from the North Carolina School Boards Association.
