For the second straight week the Granite Bears had no problem with its non-conference opponent, rolling over Surry Central 63-13 in Mount Airy.
Granite Bears' Quarterback Aaron Wheeler and running backs Andy Temoney and Chase Smith followed the road plowed by their offensive line as Mount Airy ran for over 400 yards and eight touchdowns combined.
Wheeler went six-for-six for 110 yards passing and one touchdown and finished with six carries for 117 yards and two touchdowns. Temoney carried the ball 11 times for 115 yards and two scores with Smith chipping in 109 yards on 9 carries and one touchdown.
Bears faithful held their collective breath after first string running back Michael Dobson tweaked his right ankle on the second play from scrimmage. But even with Dobson sidelined for the remainder of the game, the Eagles proved no match for the Granite Bears at home.
Dobson said following the game he should be cleared to play for next weeks game with North Surry.
The first score came three minutes into the game when Aaron Wheeler found wideout E.J. Valentine for a four-yard touchdown. Surry Central managed one first down on the ensuing drive, but a fumbled snap by Quarterback Brett Boyles on third and one forced the Eagles to punt.
Mount Airy started at its own 16 but had no problem moving the ball down field, picking up four first downs on its second drive led by junior fullback Luke Wheeler.
Wheeler rumbled for a 19-yard run and hauled in a 20 yard reception to move into Eagle territory, capping off the drive with a 26 yard touchdown run on third and eight. Tyler Hull hit the extra point and Mount Airy led 14-0 with just under a minute left in the first quarter.
Surry Central went three and out on their next possession and the Granite Bears didn't wait around to capitalize. On the first play of the drive Quarterback Aaron Wheeler sliced through the Surry Central defense and sped in for a 78-yard touchdown run, bringing to score to 21-0 with 10 minutes left till half time.
Surry Central finally got on the board following Wheeler's run, putting together a long drive of their own. Quarterback Brett Boyles connected with wideout Casey Felts twice for catches of 15 and 28 yards and finished off one of the few bright spots for the Eagles with a 26 yard touchdown run. Surry Central's two point try failed and the Bears led 21-6 with eight minutes remaining in the second quarter.
But any hope for the Eagles was short-lived, as the Granite Bears would find the endzone three more times before the half.
Andy Temoney scored on Bears next two possessions
Mount Airy senior defensive back Dorian Gwyn intercepted Surry Central's Boyles on third and 11 on the next possession as the Bears looked to add another score before the half.
Minutes later a scary moment caused Shelton Stadium to fall quiet, as Central's Casey Felts lay motionless after a violent collision with Mount Airy's Aaron Culler knocked him to the ground. After a delay, Felts was taken from the field on a stretcher by the Mount Airy Rescue Squad. Following the game, Surry Central Head Coach Monty Southern said Felts would be “OK,” having suffered only a mild concussion.
Boyles was intercepted again by Mount Airy's E.J. Valentine and Aaron Wheeler finished the first half scoring
The second half saw much of the same, as Central's offensive attack was no match for the Bears' defensive front.
Central coach Monty Southern chalked the lopsided loss up to his team losing focus of their game plan and being outmatched by Mount Airy's athletic ability.
“We competed for about five minutes,” Southern said. “Mount Airy has a ton of athletes and we knew that. When we realized it was going to be hard, we realized we didn't want it that much. We have to get these boys to realize that even when things are going your way you've got to fight for your team. You've got to do what you work on and don't worry about the other team.”
