DOBSON — Surry County Commissioners will visit a variety of topics, including the proposed site of the new Pilot Mountain Middle School, when they meet at the Surry County Government Center Monday at 6 p.m.

In their only August meeting, commissioners will discuss a request they place the issue of making the Pine Ridge fire district eligible for public funding on November’s election ballot.

Pine Ridge is the only such district in Surry County which does not levy a fire tax to help fund its volunteer fire department. Fire Chief Billy Griffith and Danny Lineberry will present the case to commissioners after garnering the 466 petition signatures needed to bring their case to the board. Surry County Fire Marshal Doug Jones also will be on hand.

In addition to the fire tax discussion, the county board will hear from Crossroad’s Behavioral Healthcare Area Director David Swann as he gives a report updating the activities of the county’s behavioral healthcare provider.

Surry County Schools Superintendent Dr. Ashley Hinson will present his office’s findings concerning the site of the new Pilot Mountain Middle School.

Two public hearings are on the agenda for Monday night’s meeting as well. Surry County Planning Director Scott Carpenter will present a rezoning application for a property at 110 Danbury Lane in the Longhill Township and county attorney Ed Woltz will present a public hearing on a amendment to the county’s ambulance franchise ordinance. The public hearings are scheduled to begin shortly after the meeting starts at 6 p.m.

County Commissioner meetings are open to the public and take place on the third floor of the County Government Center, located off Hamby Road in Dobson.
