Strong finish powers Brown to Modified victory
WINSTON-SALEM - Tim Brown loves the 25-lap races at Bowman Gray Stadium - and after his performance on Saturday, it's easy to see why he's a little biased.
“I just like them because you're up on the wheel, and you're bringing everything you've got for 25 laps,” said Brown, a resident of Cana, Virginia. And the No. 83 car of Brown held nothing back Saturday in the Farm Bureau Insurance Modified Series. Out of six events in 2008, Brown has been the fastest qualifier each and every time. “Our car's been really dominant in qualifying, and it stays like that in the race,” said Brown.
But things didn't look so simple for Brown during the first few laps. While Brown's tires took time to heat up, Burt Myers of Walnut Cove delivered a few hard taps to the rear bumper of Brown. The contact was so intense that Brown's car slid sideways a few times coming out of turn four.
Unshaken, Brown continued to maintain control and stay in the lead. Burt Myers took second place with Bobby Hutchens of Lexington taking third.
The “Madhouse Scramble” sent Brent Elliott of Denton to the pole for the second race. Although Brent Elliott has been a fierce competitor in the past at Bowman Gray, he hasn't been seen very often flying around the legendary quarter-mile track recently. Elliott returned to the Stadium in 2008, although the start to his season was a little disappointing: Prior to Saturday, Elliott hadn't yet scored a top-10 finish.
But Elliott showed that he still had the old fire within him, leading every lap and taking the checkered. With all of the emotions and memories rushing back, Elliott dedicated the win to his late father. Robert Jeffreys of Winston-Salem and Alfred Hill of Jonesville finished second and third.
In the Webb Heating & A/C Co. Sportsman Series, David Adams of Yadkinville took victory in the first race. Kenny Bost of Kernersville claimed second, and Mike Evans of King finished third. As Ryan Robertson and Mitch Gales battled for the lead in the second Sportsman race, they collided with each other and spun.
Kyle Edwards of King was able to take advantage of the situation to move into the lead and take the win. Kenny Bost of Kernersville fought his way to the front to finish in second, and Ronnie Clifton of Walkertown claimed third.
Ethan Stoltz of Walkertown was able to pass Donnie Martin of Wallburg for the lead in the 20-lapper for the 104.1 WTQR Street Stock Series. Stoltz went on to win. John McNeal of Winston-Salem took second, and David Sumner of Trinity claimed third.
Saturday was the Craftsman Stadium Stock 50 - the longest and most prestigious race of the year for the Time Warner Cable Stadium Stock Series. Charlie Curry of Winston-Salem qualified on the pole and jumped out to the lead when the green flag fell. But Dale Barneycastle of Mocksville made his way up to second place and began threatening to pass Curry. As the two encountered lapped traffic, Barneycastle went for the pass. Curry tried to dart back inside but ended up colliding with Barneycastle and spinning out.
Barneycastle took the lead and went on to win. Jason Keaton of Mocksville finished second, and Jimmy Absher of Rural Hall finished third.
