CK Technologies LLC recently hosted a plant tour for Surry Central and East Surry High schools. The tour was hosted by Mark Miller, president, Carol Colna, human resources manager and James Bell Sr. materials specialist.

The students in attendance are enrolled in technical related courses at their respective high schools and this was an opportunity for the young adults to gain knowledge of the plastics and painting processes. Plastics manufacturing is new to the area and was a chance to see how advanced these processes have become over the years.

During the tour Miller discussed how plastic resin pellets are molded and formed in large tonnage presses in the Montpelier, Ohio location. These products are used on the exterior portions of semi cabs, school buses and other large truck vehicles. These products are then shipped from the molding facility to our current painting and assembly facility in Mount Airy.

The students were able to watch the painting and baking process and see how advanced these processes are and within their own backyards.

Another interesting topic discussed was the current LEED certification the North Carolina building is working towards. CK Technologies constructed this facility with the mindset to “Go Green.” There are several features in the building such as; low water flow facilities, recycled building materials, use of skylights to reduce energy usage, and more green areas around the building with bicycle, hybrid and carpooling parking locations available.

“That this was a splendid opportunity for the students to have a visual experience of where our future is going from protecting the environment to shaping products with plastic,” Colna said.
