New administrator hired in Patrick

Staff Report

STUART, Va. - The planning director for Gloucester County in eastern Virginia has been hired as Patrick County's new administrator at a reported salary of $77,500 annually.

William P. “Jay” Scudder, a native of the Lynchburg area, was selected from among about 25 applicants for the position, which has been filled on an interim basis by Craig Teller after the resignation of County Administrator Mike Burnette in December.

Scudder, 49, has more than 20 years of local government experience. Before becoming director of planning in Gloucester County, he served as director of planning and economic development in Bedford for five years and was a neighborhood planner and community-development coordinator in nearby Lynchburg for six years. Scudder also has experience in financial management.

He holds a bachelor's degree in political science/public administration and state certifications in planning, industrial development, zoning and building codes.

Scudder was among three finalists for the county administrator's post, who were interviewed by the Patrick Board of Supervisors. He said he sought the position due to a familiarity with the county and a love of its people, developed through numerous visits for camping and other activities.

The administrator is responsible for managing the day-to-day affairs of county government.

Teller, a former administrator in Carroll County who agreed to fill in after Burnette's departure, will vacate the interim administrator's post Monday.

Scudder will assume his duties in Patrick County early next month.
