Coach Barry Hall of East Surry wanted South Stokes' ace pitcher Jason Brown to throw a ton of pitches when the two teams met Wednesday in the Northwest 1-A Conference tournament semifinals.
Hall got his wish, but Brown stayed sharp and East couldn't capitalize in a 5-1 loss to the Sauras at Mount Airy High School.
South (17-5) will play West Wilkes in the tournament championship tonight at 7 p.m. The Blackhawks held on to beat Elkin 10-6 in the other semifinal game.
Brown was protected an early lead and nearly went the distance - allowing one run off three hits, walked three and struck out 17.
Ethan Boles took the loss for the Cardinals. He gave way to Troy Jessup in the fifth and Dillon Wilcox in the sixth.
“We accomplished what we wanted. He threw a lot of pitches. 100 some odd pitches,” Hall said. “We had some bad at-bats and some good at-bats.
“Ethan has been sharper than he was. At one time if we could have made two plays we'd be up 1-0 going into the fifth. That's how we beat him last year. We made no mistakes.”
A year ago, East beat South 3-2 in the NCHSAA Class 1-A playoffs at Walnut Cove.
On Wednesday, the Sauras quickly put East in the hole as Brown struck out the side to start the game.
Ryan Gore tripled and Patrick Spaugh drew a walk before Tyler Kloc came up with an RBI sacrifice in the bottom of the first. Sterling Fiske drove in another run for the Sauras before the inning was over.
East (14-10) cut the lead in half in the second inning.
Jayson Murphy singled and hustled to third on a sac bunt from Patrick Marion.
Troy Jessup's one-out RBI single made it 2-1 South, but that was it for East that inning.
Gore reached on an error in the second, Spaugh drew a walk and Kloc drilled an RBI double to tack on another run for South.
“You can't make any mistakes and beat a pitcher of his caliber,” Hall said. “The bad thing is we are going to see a pitcher just like him, either Jordan Matthews or North Moore (in the first round of the state playoffs).
“You can't walk on the field and expect to win. South has a good ball club. They just have too many weapons.”
Tommy Nagle doubled and went to third on a passed ball in the sixth. Gore came up with an RBI sacrifice. Wilcox came in for Jessup and allowed a triple to Spaugh and sac RBI from Kloc to make it 5-1 South.
Walt Tuttle would get the only other hit of the night for East, off Brown in the seventh. Brown was replaced by Ethan Rice.
“I'm glad we got a couple runs in the beginning of the game and hopefully set the tone for our team,” South coach Gary Nail said. “(Brown) threw well. I was really pleased with him. The hits they got, he was a little high.”
South's only two league losses this year came to West Wilkes, who finished 16-0 in the conference.
Nail said he expects another close game much like the teams' last meeting in the final regular season game.
“I'd be shocked if it's a blowout one way or another,” Nail said. “It's going to be a challenge.”
