MVC golf champs! North wins

WEST JEFFERSON - Make it 2-for-2 for North Surry's talented golf team.
The Greyhounds followed up a regular season Mountain Valley 2-A Conference championship with a tournament title on Thursday at Mountain Aire Golf Course.
North shot 151-155-306 and freshman Justin Young earned medalist honors with a 36-34-70 on the par 72 course.
Wilkes Central finished second with a 159-159-318 and Forbush 159-163-322) and Ashe County (159-163-322) tied for third.
Surry Central (177-170-390) and North Wilkes (193-197-390) rounded out the field.
Cody Collins shot a 38-37-75 and Jody Collins shot a 39-40-79 for the Greyhounds. Other scores posted by North were Brandon Johnson (38-44-82), Carson Ramey (42-46-88) and Brandon Atkins (43-49-92).
“I knew we had the ability to win the conference. The guys came out today and took care of business,” North coach Daron Atkins said. “The guys played extremely smart.
“(Justin) played extremely smart today. He's a freshman and he's going to be somebody to be reckoned with the next two years.
“I can't say enough about our seniors. Cody, Jody, Brandon and Brandon came out played hard and played to win. Carson is the sleeper on our team. A couple matches where our other guys had an off day he snuck in there with a 40 or 41 and it really counted.”
Trey Scott from Ashe County was named conference player of the year for the second straight season. Last year he tied with Cody Collins for player of the year honors.
“Trey Scott had a fantastic year,” Atkins said.
Scott shot a 33-41-74 on Thursday. Wilkes Central's Kirk Mitchell also had a solid round with a 36-41-77.
Surry Central's top scores were posted by Seth Thomas (45-39-84), Ethan Moore (42-43-85) and Cody Hodges (43-43-86).
North Surry, Wilkes Central and Forbush all qualified as a team for regionals, which get underway May 5 at at Deer Brook Golf Course in Shelby.
“I also told them we've still got some unfinished business with regionals coming up,” Atkins said. “My goal is to get those guys to state.”
