To the Editor,
To whom it does concern: I continue to be appalled at the events that have transpired at the hands of Gary Brown and his superior, Surry County Health and Nutrition Center Director Samantha Ange.
How many protests, how many articles, how many complaints from the public, how many horror stories do you have to hear, how many deaths will it take for action to be taken?
I hear it is because it is the same group of people complaining. Not so, as proved by the last commissioners meeting where Mr. Brown was removed from the position of director, but somehow remained in a position of an unknown title. There is also the fact that these same people are the ones that have to deal with Mr. Brown because they are working for the animals to actually save them. They are the ones that see firsthand the attitude and lack of cooperation. They are the ones that get called and not given the chance to help. They are the ones giving voluntarily of their time, their home and their money to help save the lives of animals.
I have personally sent invitations to the shelter to attend adoption events and have not received a single response; not even an “i am sorry we cannot attend email.”
It was also my understanding that there was now a volunteer coordinator working to help these animals. I have not seen any volunteer/adoption event efforts from the shelter since the last big hype and the appointment of that person. It is like that position no longer exists? I am willing to bet if jobs were not on the line and shelter employees were free to speak without the fear of losing their jobs, or worse nothing being done after the truth comes out, that even you would be appalled at the daily actions.
I understand this county works on a buddy system and friends of friends is the normal hiring process. Change is possible and it can be done. I can give the commissioner examples and contacts of other shelters that have made TNR programs work, spay and neuter work, and moving towards a No kill shelter work.
There are people willing to write applications for grants as long as Mr. Brown and associates and not standing in the way of the efforts and blocking them. There are people willing to volunteer if treated with respect. The bottom line is simple — it does not have to be this way and these innocent animals do not have to die.
I sincerely hope the commissioners understand that the citizens of Surry County will not tolerate this and my vote will reflect the choices They make.
