Surry Central baseball upsets Mount Pleasant

MOUNT PLEASANT – Surry Central’s baseball team scored a 6-5 upset win against Mount Pleasant in the first round of the Class 2A West playoffs on Wednesday night.

Samuel Harris homered for the Eagles (14-11), who move on to play at Hunter Huss (6-16) in the second round. Harris was 2 for 3 at the plate with four RBIs.

Central finished with eight hits as a team.

Mount Pleasant was a No. 1 seed and had finished undefeated in the Rocky River Conference.

Kaden Leonard had a two-run single in the first inning to put Central head 2-0, and then Harris hit a two-run shot in the second to give the Eagles a four-run lead.

The Tigers (16-8) would tie the game at 4-4 in the third inning, led by Justin Green’s two-run homer.

However, Central answered with two more runs in the fourth and held on.

Cole Fowler started on the mound for the Eagles, who snapped a two-game slide. Fowler got the win and Leonard picked up the save. Fowler threw the first four innings.

Huss (Gastonia) defeated West Wilkes 1-0 in its first-round playoff game.
