PILOT MOUNTAIN — Alec Wilson hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to lift East Surry to a 4-2 win over Walkertown on Friday night.

On Senior Night, the Cardinals found themselves behind 2-0, but East scored four runs in the sixth and closed the door in the seventh to finish the regular season 22-0.

This is the first time in school history that the Cards have gone undefeated in the regular season.

Almost lost amid all the excitement of the perfect season and Senior Night, this win also marks a milestone in the coaching career of legend Barry Hall.

Hall now has 700 career wins, all at East Surry.

Things didn’t start off smoothly for the Cards.

In the first inning, Logan Sheets singled, and Marion walked to put two aboard with one out.

Wilson struck out chasing a high ball on a full count, and Sheets was thrown out on the pitch trying to steal third.

Walkertown (16-2 coming in) scored thanks to an error.

A ground ball and a bad throw put a runner on second.

Hunter Wolfington doubled to the left corner.

The next batter hit a grounder deep in the hole. Scott Meredith couldn’t get the out at first, and Wolfington, running with two outs, rounded third and reached home for a 2-0 lead.

In another inning, Marion singled, but the Cards made three outs on hard-hit balls in the air. Wilson and Madison Chilton flew out, and Seth Brim hit a towering pop fly.

In the sixth, Joshua Sawyers led off with an infield hit, and Weston Payne drew a walk.

After a pitching change, Wilson hit a one-out homer over the left field fence to put East on top 3-2.

Chilton and Brim followed with singles, and Scott Meredith drew a walk.

Blake Marion, pinch-hitting for Preston Smith, drew a walk to force in Chilton’s courtesy runner.

Tyler Marion pitched a scoreless seventh and improved his record to 8-0 on the season. He had 12 strikeouts and only one walk.

The Northwest Conference Tournament will be played Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, with the semifinals and final at Mount Airy.

East Surry and Walkertown get first-round byes.

East will play the winner between North Stokes and Bishop. Walkertown awaits the winner of Mount Airy and Atkins.

If the Bears win as expected, Mount Airy and Walkertown will be the 7 p.m. game Thursday, and East Surry will play the early game at 4:30 p.m.
