SCC softball drops close games to Pioneers

DOBSON — Surry Community College’s softball team recently dropped a pair of close nonconference contests on the road to nationall-ranked Spartanburg Methodist.


The Knights (18-12) lost the first game 4-3 and the second 7-4.


In Game 1, Surry scored two runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game, but gave up the g0-ahead run in the bottom of the inning. The Pioneers (31-12) out-hit Surry 8-3 in the game.


Shey Steelman (Forbush) took the loss in the pitcher’s circle for the Knights. Rachel Wagoner (Starmount) was 2-for-3 at the plate and Natalie Hauser (Forbush) had a double, walked and drove in two runs.


In Game 2, Surry had a 4-2 lead before the Pioneers put five runs on the board in the sixth inning to take the lead for good. The Knights had eight hits, but committed four errors.


Tori Clontz took the loss. Brittany Myers (Surry Central) was 2-for-3 at the plate with a double, RBI, and run scored. Candace Newsome was 2-for-3 with a double. Courtney Barnes (Starmount) hit a two-run homer.


Surry’s last four scheduled games were a home-and-home Region X series against Wake Technical Community College.


Surry’s baseball team is scheduled to take on Spartanburg Methodist on Tuesday at home.
