WALNUT COVE — South Stokes dominated its track and field meet this week, but North Surry raked in a few medals.
The Greyhounds took first place in six categories at Thursday’s Western Piedmont meet with South Stokes and Carver.
The Hounds also picked up two silver and four bronze medals individually. Relay teams picked up two seconds and a third in races.
For the Lady Hounds, Alex Cooke put on a tremendous showing. She won her two best events (discus and shot put) by easy margins, then added a silver and bronze medal in leaping categories.
Cooke won the discus by more than 10 feet over South Stokes’ Melanie Avent. She won the shot put by 7 feet over teammate Erin March.
She was second in the triple jump by a foot and a half. She finished third in the long jump.
For the boys, Matthew Mayes took first in the 1600 meters (by 17 seconds) and the 3200 meters (by 28 seconds).
Andrew Cave won the shot put by 17 inches over Carver wrestling standout Nathan London.
Nathan Fletcher won the high jumper by 6 inches over South Stokes’ Devin Feimster, with teammate Cody Rogers in third place.
Fletcher also finished seventh in the long jump where teammate Marcus Sawyers took third.
In addition to his bronze, Sawyers was eighth in the 100m and seventh in the 200m.
Ryan March earned a bronze in the triple jump and was seventh in the 100m.
His sister Erin March was fourth in discus and fifth in 100m to go with her silver in the shot put.
