Mount Airy’s tennis team improved to 14-2 with a 9-0 sweep of East Surry on Senior Night.
The Bears honored their two seniors: Blake Hensley and four-year starter Mitch Kessler. Then they pitched their 10th shutout of the season, giving up just four games in 12 sets for singles.
Including doubles play, the Bears beat the Cards by a total score of 96-9.
Kessler beat Dan Moore 6-0, 6-0, the 10th time this season he has blanked an opponent. Hensley, playing the sixth spot, beat Trevor Lowe 6-0, 6-0.
East’s John Marion put up a fight on the fifth court against Gentry Williamson before the Bear sophomore won 6-3, 6-0.
Second seed Justin Leonard beat Aaron Sigmon 6-0, 6-0. Third seed Jack Marion beat Ben Ruedisueli 6-0, 6-0. Fourth seed Hunt Harrison won 6-1, 6-0 over Lucas Bonilla.
In doubles, Kessler and Leonard beat Sigmon and John Marion 8-0.
Jack Marion and Williamson beat Ruedisueli and Lowe 8-2.
Harrison and Will Sparks went up 3-0 on Daniel Hancock and Devon Goble. East won back-to-back games to cut it to 3-2 before the Bears pulled away for an 8-3 win.
Harrison and Sparks remain undefeated in doubles at 14-0.
The Bears’ final match of the regular season is today at Elkin. The Cards travel to West Stokes today and Atkins Thursday.
Next week, the Northwest Conference Tournament will be held at Mount Airy on Tuesday and Wednesday.
