WALKERTOWN — Mount Airy improved to 12-1 overall and 5-1 in the Northwest 1A Conference with a tennis sweep over Walkertown on Thursday.
The teams played eight-game pro sets in the doubleheader.
The Bears were without three regulars — Jack Marion, Blake Hensley and Sam Brown — for the second half of the doubleheader as they had to attend a choral event.
In the second match, Justin Leonard and Mitch Kessler quickly put Mount Airy ahead 2-0. Hunt Harrison, at No. 3 for this match, gave the Bears a 3-0 lead. Jon Seagraves and Jesus Orozco, the Bears No. 9 and 10 seeds respectively, secured the team victory.
Mount Airy swept the doubles with the new combinations at No. 2 and No. 3.
“In both matches, especially in the second, the players handled exceptionally well the changes in our lineup,” coach Rodney Pell of Mount Airy said.
In the first match of the day, the Bears were missing No. 4 seed Will Sparks because of an illness. Kessler, Leonard, and Marion put Mount Airy ahead 3-0. Brown moved up to No. 6 and pulled away from 3-2 to win 8-3 and give the Bears a 4-0 lead. Gentry Williamson, playing at No. 5, secured the team victory. Harrison, at No. 4, pulled away from 6-5 to win 8-5 and complete the singles sweep.
In doubles, Marion teamed with Williamson for the No. 3 duo.
Mount Airy hosts Forbush for a nonconference match on Monday.
