DOBSON — The Lady Eagles defeated the Lady Cardinals 4-0 in Thursday’s soccer action.
Surry Central (5-1) won its fifth straight with a shutout over rival East Surry.
With the first good weather of the season, the two teams battled evenly throughout the first half.
The Eagles could manage just one goal, and East Surry nearly scored a tying goal, but keeper Nohemi Lara made a diving stop.
Nearly 28 minutes passed before Central broke the scoreless tie.
Yasmin Vega had the ball on the left wing and fired the ball toward the goal. Haylee Harrison made a run toward the near post and deflected the shot past keeper Maggie Collins.
This was Vega’s first game back from an injury, noted Central coach Matt Richardson. The Eagles were missing three other players in Kaitin Kidd, Brooke Lewis and Kelsey Taylor.
The 1-0 score would last until five minutes into the second half when Sarah Bruce boomed a direct kick into the net. The ball was about 30 yards out, and Bruce sent the ball high and over the keeper’s head.
Bruce had a similar play in the first half, but Collins made a leaping play to deflect the ball over the cross bar.
Collins had several good stops in the game, noted Richardson. She was tough.
In the 54th minute, the Eagles earned a corner kick.
Tess Dockery played the ball into Maddy Snow, who flicked it into the net for a 3-0 lead.
The final score came with about 13 minutes left when Harrison delivered off an assist from Laura Dobbins.
Lara held a shutout in the first half, then Tori Blevins guarded the Central goal for the second period to preserve the win.
This was a completely better effort than against Mount Airy the night before, said Richardson. The girls were more organized and played better together.
East Surry has a lot of inexperience, but the players are learning with every game, said East coach Bill Hart. The girls deserve credit for working hard and never quitting.
The Eagles travel to Wilkes Central Tuesday, while the Cards (0-4) host North Surry on Monday.
