PILOT MOUNTAIN — Mount Airy swept in singles and doubles to earn a 9-0 Northwest 1A Conference win against East Surry on Tuesday.
It was the conference opener for both teams. The Bears (3-0 overall, 1-0 league) took singles in straight sets. All of the Bears held serve throughout their matches and five of the six never trailed on a chilly day with temperatures in the upper 30s.
Mitch Kessler, Jack Marion and Blake Hensley blanked their opponents. The Cardinals’ No. 2 seed Dan Moore held the opening serve, but Justin Leonard won 12 of the next 13 games to give Mount Airy the 6-0 team lead going into doubles.
Freshmen Will Sparks and Hunt Harrison also picked up wins in singles.
The Bears’ doubles teams also held serve in all three matches. East’s No. 2 duo of Aaron Sigmon and Lucas Bonilla held the opening serve, but Leonard and Marion won the next eight games to earn the victory.
Kessler and Sam Brown won at No. 1 doubles and Sparks and Harrison teamed up for the win at No. 3 doubles.
Mount Airy hosts North Surry today at 4 p.m. and travels to Atkins on Thursday. Coach Rodney Pell of Mount Airy will go up against his former team when the Bears play the Greyhounds.
East Surry (0-1) lost several players from last year’s team, but had three seniors in the lineup on Tuesday — Moore, Lowe and Ben Ruedisueli. The Cardinals travel to Bishop McGuinness for a conference match on Thursday.
The Cards are coached by Brandon Cook, who took over this season for Lyndsey Haywood.
