Mount Airy won its first two matches this season, both on the road, coming into its home opener on Wednesday night against West Wilkes.
Mount Airy trailed the Blackhawks 4-0 at halftime of Wednesday’s game. Final results were not available at press time.
In the season opener, the Bears defeated North Wilkes 4-1. Mount Airy led 3-0 at halftime in the match. Jessica Miranda, Marissa Petri and Judy Madrigal scored goals for the Bears, who had 26 shots in the game. Miranda and Madrigal each had assists and Kimberly Lachino had an assist as well. Ailia Halpern and Maria Rodriguez each played a half in goal for Mount Airy.
The Bears also posted a shutout against Thomasville, winning 7-0. Mount Airy scored four goals in the first half and had 26 shots. Miranda had two goals and three assists for the Bears. Madigal and Lachino also scored twice, and Rodriguez had another goal. Jessica Escutia had two assists and Mary Glen Hatcher had an assist.
Mount Airy is scheduled to host Thomasville for a non-conference match on Friday night. Mount Airy has four seniors in the lineup this season — Rodriguez, Petri, Escutia and Kathryn Beasley.
Elsewhere on the pitch for area teams, North Surry lost 9-0 in its soccer opener to East Wilkes on Wednesday, East Surry had its first scheduled match of the season against West Stokes on Wednesday night; and Surry Central is 1-1 with a match scheduled at home against North Wilkes tonight.
