An investigation has begun into the discovery of a body in the county that emergency officials were alerted to early Saturday afternoon.
According to county Emergency Services Director John Shelton, a call came in to emergency communications at 12:03 p.m., notifying personnel that a body had been discovered.
Shelton, emergency workers and deputies with the Surry County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene and confirmed that the body was that of a human.
The body was discovered by neighbors in the Appaloosa Trail community, Shelton said. It was located in a creek in a partially wooded area.
But little more is known at present.
“We’re going to have to send the body off for an autopsy,” he said. “Right now we don’t even know whether it’s a male or a female.”
The cause of death is undetermined at the moment, and Shelton said the investigators were on the scene.
He noted that it will likely be days before more concrete information is known.
