Mount Airy saw a 13-point lead slip away in a heart-breaking 56-54 loss to Winston-Salem Prep in a Northwest 1A Conference game on Friday night.
Coye Simmons got an offensive rebound and put-back off a Mike Hughes miss with less than a second left for the game-winner.
The Bears (10-5 overall, 3-2 league) led 56-54 in the closing moments of the game before turning the ball over.
“We had it and gave it away,” coach Levi Goins of Mount Airy said. “Our guys played really hard. Carson and Clay (Mounce) both played very well. We are young and inexperienced. It’s hard to replicate what Prep does in practice. It’s a learning experience for us for sure.”
Prep played without sharpshooter Aaron Lipscomb, who was suspended. Mike Hughes played limited minutes for the Phoenix as well. Terrell Hollingsworth picked up the slack for Prep with a game-high 24 points. Simmons finished with 12.
Carson Mounce scored 14 to lead Mount Airy. Clay Mounce and Khaileel Dailey each had 10.
Mount Airy led 17-8 after the first quarter and 32-22 at halftime.
“We’ve got to learn how to finish games,” Goins said. “We’ve lost five games by a total of 11 points. Heart-breaker after heart-breaker. As we mature we’ve got to learn how to finish, and not turn it over when times get tough.”
Mount Airy travels to Bishop McGuinness on Friday night.
