A fast and furious pace by Mount Airy proved to be too much for the Aussies to overcome.
The Bears went on a 22-9 run to start the game and led by 29 points at halftime on the way to a 78-36 win against Team Energy in the Mount Airy Christmas Classic on Friday.
The Mounce brothers led the charge for the Bears, who improved to 8-3 overall on the season. Carson Mounce had 12 points, six rebounds and three blocked shots, and Clay Mounce finished with 11 points and six rebounds. Dylan Gallimore contributed nine points, Justin Ward had eight, and Isaiah King had eight points and seven rebounds.
Mount Airy had a significant advantage at every position and asserted its will early, controlling the tempo against a team coming off a long trip.
“Our motto was ‘play hard, play smart, play fast.’ Our starters absolutely did that in the first half,” Mount Airy coach Levi Goins said. “We outran them.”
Ten players scored for the Bears, who came away with 15 steals for the game. Mount Airy expanded the lead in the third quarter with a 21-7 run.
Ben Barlow and Lachlen Ware led Team Energy with eight points apiece. After the game, the Australians were scheduled to travel to Charlotte Friday night to watch an NBA game between the Bobcats and the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Goins said the team enjoyed getting to know the travel team. Tonight, the Australians will take on North Surry while Mount Airy will play Starmount in the second day of the tournament. After the game, the Australian players will stay with members of the Bears’ basketball team.
Mount Airy won its third-straight game in convincing fashion. The road gets tough in a hurry for the Bears, who take on East Surry, Winston-Salem Prep and Bishop McGuinness after the Christmas Classic. Goins said he expects a tough game from the Rams tonight.
“Starmount is playing very good,” Goins said. “They have good guard play with Luke Shore and they are well-coached.”
