DOBSON — Surry Central couldn’t grab a couple of key rebounds late in the game to allow West Forsyth to escape with a four-point win Monday night.
Twice in the closing minute, the Golden Eagles fouled the Titans and sent them to the line for a one-and-one. As hoped, the visiting team missed the front end, but both times was able to come up with the offensive rebound.
Two made free throws turned a two-point game into a four-point win for the 4A school from Clemmons.
The Eagles led in the first quarter, up 16-10, but then the Titans clamped down on defense. Central scored just six points in the second quarter and fell behind 24-22 at the break.
West Forsyth pushed that to 38-33 at the end of the third quarter.
Central gave itself a chance by allowing just five points in the first seven and a half minutes of the fourth quarter before those final two free throws made it a two-possession game.
Greg Ballas led the Titans with 12 points, and Austin Rose and Austin Delucia scored seven each.
Darion Slade is one of the stars of the team, and the Eagles held him to just two points, noted assistant coach Jeff Edmonds.
Zach Wilmoth led Central with 11 points, but shot just 2-11 on the inside. He also had 11 rebounds
Dante Hanner had 10 points, 12 rebounds and two blocked shots.
Brett Mosley scored seven, Samuel Harris six, Jake Wilmoth five, and Kirk Needham and Jeremy Patterson two each.
The Eagles play Mount Airy on Wednesday. However, the Lady Eagles play West Forsyth in the Mary Garber Tournament that night.
