The Lady Bears used a big third quarter to take control of their game with the Lady Wildcats for a 54-38 win Thursday.
West Stokes led for almost all of the second quarter, but Mount Airy scored 11 straight points from the end of the first half and into the start of the third.
Jasmine Varney and Davi Barbour didn’t score in the first 15 minutes of the game, but contributed 24 points combined over the last 17 minutes.
“That shows the depth of our team,” said Coach Howard Mayo. “Different people can step up and have good scoring games.” The Bears finished with four players in double figures.
At the tip, the Bears surged ahead 7-2, but then didn’t score the rest of the period, allowing the Wildcats to take a 9-7 lead into the second.
The Cats led 19-17 with about 30 seconds left in the half, but Barbour scored on an inside shot and then drew a shooting foul just before the buzzer. She hit both shots for a quick four points to put Mount Airy ahead 21-19.
Ayano Shelton and Alex Atkins hit shots to open the third quarter, then Barbour and Varney scored 15 of the next 17 points.
Varney had all 10 of her points in that spurt, which gave Mount Airy a 42-26 lead with seven and a half minutes left in the game.
“That was a good way to come out and establish us,” Mayo said of the third-quarter surge.
“We did a good job defensively, limiting them to five points in the quarter. They only had 12 field goal attempts in the second half. Our pressure really seemed to cause them problems.”
The Wildcats scored six straight points in the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 42-32, but then the Bears went on a 7-2 run, highlighted by a three-pointer from the left corner by Shelton.
Mayo called a timeout after the three, holding a 49-34 lead with 1:28 left.
The Bears ran some clock with Barbour scoring the last five points on a three-point play and two fouls shots. She finished with 14 points and was 5-5 at the charity stripe.
Atkins led the Bears with 15 points, 11 rebounds and four steals.
Shelton had 11 points, six rebounds and three steals. Mikayla Seivers added three points and Halee Ratcliff one.
The Bears as a team handed out 15 assists.
The Lady Bears play at home again tonight against Atkins.
